Harbinger (2724 Ingersoll Avenue) opened in 2017 and quickly earned a reputation for fine dining and seasonal, creative dishes in the Des Moines food scene. Harbinger serves vegetable focused New American small plates focused on flavors and techniques.
“We strive to showcase Iowa farmers, artisans, and craftsmen in every aspect of our business and tell a story about the place we call home,” said owner Joe Tripp. Chef Tripp has earned seven James Beard nominations for Best Chef Midwest.
The restaurant’s menu is also heavily influenced by extensive travels through Asia. Together, Chef Tripp and the Harbinger team have traveled to Japan, Thailand and Vietnam to gather inspiration. However, Harbinger also values their relationships closer to home.
“We source our coffee from our friends across the street at Zanzibar and getting floral arrangements for the tables and walls from our neighbors at Wildflower,” said Tripp. “The people who live within the neighborhoods that surround us often bring us flowers and herbs from their gardens, too.”
