Order a cold one at the Alpine Taproom, and it is easy to see why it’s been a beloved dive bar at 2720 Ingersoll Avenue for 80 years. The Alpine has also been selected multiple times for USA Today’s list of the best dive bars in America.
At the Alpine, wooden wall panels adorned with neon beer signs hold stories of years past. Teal chairs and green booths complement the red floors and ceiling.
Play pool? Grab a pool cue and admire the “Lite Beer” lamp made of stained glass. If pool isn’t your style, Alpine has a South Park and a Godzilla pinball machine. The bar also has an arcade game called “Perfect Pour,” in which players serve as many customers as possible to earn the most tips.
Not only does the bar serve domestics, but it also serves local Des Moines favorites such as Exile, Confluence, and Big Grove. Their “Alpine Coolers” are a secret recipe. Alpine Coolers are particularly popular among Drake alums and during Drake Relays. The Alpine is also known for its Moscow Mules and for their Watermelon Crawler shot, made with watermelon schnapps, amaretto, and Southern Comfort.
While the Alpine Taproom has been on Ingersoll Avenue for 80 years, it has had different owners. Most recently, the Alpine was purchased by Cory Wendel in 2025, owner of Lachele’s Fine Foods – another Avenues favorite located at 2716 Ingersoll Ave. Under the new ownership, Alpine accepts credit cards and has expanded its drink menu. Find the “Alpine Melt” sandwich at both Alpine and Lachele’s Fine Foods.
